Chewelah Washington

February 20, 2026

Chewelah, WA — February 20, 2026 – NEW Health, a Federally Qualified Health Center serving Stevens, Pend Oreille, and Ferry counties, is pleased to announce plans for an expanded NEW Health Chewelah Campus that will significantly increase access to healthcare services for residents across the region.

The Chewelah Campus project will substantially build upon the services NEW Health currently offers. Today, the organization provides medical and pharmacy services on-site and behavioral health services virtually. The existing campus at Main Street and Clay Avenue supports 77 employees across clinical and administrative roles but has no space left for growth. The new campus will add dental and in‑person behavioral health services while expanding medical and pharmacy offerings. This expansion will enhance access by bringing NEW Health’s integrated care model to more individuals and families throughout the region.

“This new campus represents our long-term commitment to the Tri County region,” said Desiree Sweeney, Chief Executive Officer of NEW Health. “The project in Chewelah is central to our 8 other clinical sites and strengthens the regional healthcare and workforce for current and future generations.”

The selected site embraces a true “grow with us” approach to community health. After extensive evaluation, NEW Health determined that remodeling the former Chewelah Middle School would not be financially feasible due to rising renovation costs and structural limitations. Instead, the organization has purchased land on the south end of Chewelah to build a purpose-designed healthcare campus with room for long-term expansion and flexibility.

To support future growth, NEW Health will develop the site through a phased approach. Phase One is expected to be completed in the summer of 2027. The project is supported in part by state and federal grant funding, reflecting strong public investment in expanding access to healthcare in rural communities. Additional project details, including facility design and construction partners, will be shared as planning progresses.

NEW Health has served the Tri-County region since 1978 and remains committed to providing high-quality, affordable, and accessible care regardless of insurance status.
