Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Know the Signs, Schedule Your Screening
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a time to raise awareness, support those affected by breast cancer, and remind our communities that early detection matters.
Knowing what to look for and staying up to date on recommended screenings can help detect breast cancer early, when treatment may be more effective.
Know the Signs of Breast Cancer
Breast cancer can cause changes in the breast or nipple. Signs to watch for include:
- A new lump in the breast or underarm
- Thickening or swelling of part of the breast
- Dimpling or irritation of the breast skin
- Redness or flaky skin around the nipple or on the breast
- A nipple that turns inward or pain in the nipple area
- Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood
- Changes in the size or shape of the breast
- Pain in any area of the breast
Some people with breast cancer have no symptoms, which is why regular screening is important. If you notice a new or unusual change, contact your healthcare provider.
Early Detection Starts with Screening
Mammograms are the main screening test used to look for breast cancer. They can sometimes find cancer before a lump or other symptoms appear.
Most women should begin regular mammograms at age 40, but the right screening schedule depends on your health history and risk factors. Talk with your healthcare provider about when to start and how often to be screened.
At NEW Health, you do not need a provider’s order to schedule a mammogram. We can help you take the next step toward getting screened.
Steps to Help Lower Your Risk
Not all breast cancer risks can be prevented, but healthy habits may help lower your risk.
- Stay physically active.
- Eat a balanced diet.
- Avoid alcohol or limit your intake.
- Know your family history and discuss any concerns with your provider.
- Follow recommended breast cancer screening guidelines.
Take Action This October
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder to make your health a priority. Pay attention to changes in your body, stay current on recommended screenings, and encourage the people you care about to do the same.
