Throughout 2023, individuals enrolled in Washington Apple Health plans began receiving notifications requiring them to re-enroll to continue their health insurance coverage. For many individuals, this was the first time they had to fill out renewal information. During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, Washington State provided continuous enrollment to ensure individuals maintained their insurance coverage and access to vital health care services. However, once the Public Health Emergency ended the state began the task of re-confirming eligibility.

“A significant challenge is that a number of individuals have moved or changed phone numbers over the past couple of years,” explains NEW Health CEO Desiree Sweeney. Although the state sent out renewal notices, those notices may not have reached the client or may not have been understood. “NEW Health’s outreach staff have been proactively communicating with patients who we know need to complete the renewal process. We are here to help explain the process and to help people either renew their Apple Health plan or identify an affordable alternative. This outreach has been a significant undertaking in our rural communities.”

That is where Arcora Foundation has stepped in to support NEW Health’s capacity to provide community outreach, education, and enrollment assistance. Arcora is the state’s largest foundation dedicated to advance oral health and equity, especially for people who experience health disparities—which includes Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. In total, Arcora donated $20,000 each to six community health centers across the state—including NEW Health—to help families and individuals maintain Apple Health insurance coverage.

“Good oral health is essential to good overall health,” said Arcora President and CEO Vanetta Abdellatif. “Apple Health allows community health centers, like NEW Health, to serve as critical connections to care for people across the state managing a number of challenges who might not otherwise have access to the services they deserve. We are pleased to partner with NEW Health who shares Arcora’s vision that all people enjoy good oral and overall health, with no one left behind.”
