Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are a common but preventable public health concern. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), millions of new STI cases occur each year, many of which go undiagnosed and untreated. Left untreated, STIs can lead to serious health complications. That’s why it’s important to take control of your health through the Talk, Test, Treat approach.
What is Talk, Test, Treat?
Talk – Open Conversations Matter
Talking about STIs may feel uncomfortable, but open and honest conversations with your partner(s) and healthcare provider are essential.
- Discuss STI prevention and testing with your partner(s) before becoming sexually active.
- Ask your healthcare provider about your risk factors and what tests you may need.
- Remember, STIs often show no symptoms, so testing is key even if you feel fine.
Test – Know Your Status
Regular STI testing is crucial for early detection and treatment. The CDC recommends:
- Annual testing for sexually active individuals under 25 and those with multiple partners.
- HIV testing at least once for everyone aged 13-64.
- Pregnant individuals should get tested to prevent complications for both parent and baby.
- Anyone at increased risk (e.g., multiple partners, past STI history) should test more frequently.
Treat – Protect Yourself & Others
If you test positive for an STI, treatment is available! Many bacterial STIs, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, can be cured with antibiotics, while viral STIs like herpes and HIV can be managed with medication. Prompt treatment can prevent complications and help reduce the spread of infection.
