Losing a tooth is a big milestone in a child’s life, and what better way to celebrate than with a visit from the Tooth Fairy herself? At NEW Health Colville Dental, we’re excited to invite families to a special Meet the Tooth Fairy event on Friday, February 28th, from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM

This fun-filled afternoon will take place at 161 E 3rd Ave, Colville, WA, where kids can meet the Tooth Fairy, enjoy coloring activities, goodie bags, and learn more about keeping their smiles healthy. It’s a great opportunity for children to feel excited about dental care in a fun and friendly environment!

The Magic of the Tooth Fairy

The Tooth Fairy is a beloved childhood tradition, but have you ever wondered where the story comes from? While today’s version of the Tooth Fairy is a small, winged fairy who exchanges lost teeth for money, the idea has been around for centuries.

The tradition of saving or exchanging teeth dates back over 1,000 years, with early Norse cultures believing that children’s teeth brought good luck. In some parts of the world, including Spain and Latin America, children place their lost teeth under their pillows for Ratoncito Pérez, a tiny mouse who collects them in exchange for small gifts. Meanwhile, in France, a similar mouse known as La Petite Souris plays the role of the Tooth Fairy.

Over time, the legend evolved into the modern-day Tooth Fairy we know and love, helping children feel excited (rather than nervous) about losing their teeth.

Healthy Smiles Start Early

While the Tooth Fairy’s visit is exciting, developing strong dental habits is even more important. Good oral hygiene starts in childhood and sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Here are a few ways parents can help their children take care of their teeth:

  • Start early. Even before a child’s first tooth appears, parents should wipe their gums with a soft cloth to remove bacteria. Once teeth emerge, brushing with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush is key.
  • Make brushing fun. Let kids pick out their own toothbrush and use a fun timer or song to make brushing for two minutes more enjoyable.
  • Floss daily. Many parents overlook flossing, but it’s essential for cleaning between teeth where cavities often form.
  • Limit sugary drinks and snacks. Sugary treats can lead to cavities, so encourage water, fruits, and vegetables instead.
  • Schedule regular dental visits. Seeing the dentist regularly helps prevent problems before they start and ensures kids feel comfortable with dental care.
