March 13, 2025
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., but the good news is—it’s highly preventable with regular screenings. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and encourage early detection to save lives.
At NEW Health, we are dedicated to promoting preventive care and ensuring our community has access to essential health screenings. Our providers are here to guide you through the screening process and answer any questions about your colorectal health. By spreading awareness, we hope to encourage more people to take charge of their health and schedule a screening.
Who Should Get Screened?
The American Cancer Society recommends that adults at average risk begin screening at age 45. However, if you have a family history or other risk factors, your provider may recommend starting earlier.
Why Screenings Matter
Regular screenings can:
🔹 Detect cancer early, when it’s easier to treat
🔹 Identify precancerous polyps before they turn into cancer
🔹 Reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer altogether
Common Screening Options
- Colonoscopy (recommended every 10 years for most people)
- Stool-based tests
- CT colonography (a virtual colonoscopy)
Signs & Symptoms to Watch For
While colorectal cancer can develop without symptoms, be aware of:
🔹 Changes in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, or narrow stools)
🔹 Blood in the stool
🔹 Unexplained weight loss
🔹 Persistent abdominal pain or discomfort
🔹 Feeling like you can’t fully empty your bowels
