Know the Signs and Take Action!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to focus on prevention, early detection, and supporting those affected by breast cancer. Early detection is vital—when caught early, breast cancer is often easier to treat.
Know the Signs:
Be aware of any changes in your breasts. Symptoms to watch for include:
- A new lump in the breast or underarm
- Thickening or swelling of part of the breast
- Irritation or dimpling of breast skin
- Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or on the breast
- Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area
- Nipple discharge other than breast milk (including blood)
- Any change in the size or shape of your breast
- Pain in any area of the breast
If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait—see your provider right away! Call us at 509.935.6004 to schedule an appointment.
Screening Saves Lives
Breast cancer screenings don’t prevent cancer, but they can help detect it early. The two main screening tests are mammograms and MRIs, but other options may be right for you. Talk to your provider about when you should start screening and which test is best for you. If possible, breastfeeding your children may also help reduce risk.
Tips to Reduce Your Risk:
- Eat a balanced diet
- Stay physically active
- Avoid alcohol, or drink in moderation
- Know your family history—if breast cancer runs in your family, talk to your doctor about prevention options
Start Screening at Age 40
Women should generally begin breast cancer screenings at age 40, but your provider can help determine the right age for you based on your personal risk factors.
Take Action This Month
Breast cancer awareness is more than just a ribbon—it’s about knowledge, prevention, and care. Pay attention to your body, schedule your screenings, and encourage loved ones to do the same. Early detection can save lives!
